How the MET Method Works

MET stands for metabolic equivalent of task. It measures how hard an activity is compared to sitting still. Sitting is 1 MET. A 6 mph run is 9.8 MET, so it burns close to ten times the energy of rest.

The formula is simple: kcal = MET times body weight in kg times hours. Take a 70 kg person running at 6 mph for one hour. That is 9.8 times 70 times 1, which lands at 686 kcal. Change the weight, the time or the activity and the number moves with it.

What Affects Your Real Burn

Three things shift your true number away from the estimate. The first is weight: a heavier body burns more to move the same distance, which is why the formula scales with your weight in kilograms.

The second is intensity. MET values assume a typical effort. Push harder and you burn more than the table says; coast and you burn less. The third is fitness. A trained body moves more efficiently, so a fit runner may burn slightly less than a beginner at the same pace. Terrain, hills and wind add their own swing.
